Tire Exercises To Try At A Gym

by Alexa Hamilton

Being a member at a gym that has an outdoor workout space can significantly increase the number of exercise options at your disposal. While you can use the outdoor space for calisthenics, sprints, and other similar exercises, you may notice that the gym has large tires in this area. Tires are common at gyms that have outdoor space, and these tires present you with many different workout options. Commonly from large tractors, the weight of the tires will put your strength to the test. Here are some tire exercises that you can perform.

Tire Flip

One of the most common tire exercises that you'll see people doing at a gym's outdoor space is the tire flip. In this exercise, the tire lies flat on the ground. You crouch at one side of the tire, lift it up onto its edge, and then let it fall to the ground so that it has flipped 180 degrees. This exercise is challenging for your back, shoulder, and arm muscles, but you'll also feel a burn in your legs because of the crouched stance you use. Commonly, you'll try to flip the tire repeatedly from one end of the outdoor workout space to the other.

Tire Sledgehammer

If your gym has tires in its outdoor workout space, it probably has a selection of sledgehammers, too. People use this work tool to swing and hit the tire while it's lying flat on the ground. The weight of the sledgehammer will impact the challenge of this workout, and you may want to start with a lighter hammer if you're new to this exercise. Hitting the tire with a sledgehammer is essentially a full-body exercise, which means it will quickly increase your heart rate while also strengthening many different muscle groups.

Tire Pulls

Another tire exercise that you can perform outdoors is a tire pull. This exercise involves looping a strap through the tire, wrapping the strap around your waist or holding it in your hands, and then pulling the tire so that it slides across the ground. This is another challenging exercise that works many muscle groups. You'll strengthen your back, legs, core, and more. It can be fun to incorporate this exercise into a tire flip routine. For example, you might flip a tire across the space and then pull it back to where you started. Look for a gym in your area that has outdoor space that is equipped with tires.
